Internet

The Shawano City-County Library, in order to fulfill its mission, provides Internet access for the public to use electronic information resources.

1. The Shawano City-County Library provides access to search software in order to allow individuals to take the fullest advantage of the global resources available through the Internet. The user of the Internet should be aware that he or she might encounter material that is inaccurate, controversial, offensive or unsuitable for viewing by minors.

2. Parents or guardians, not the Shawano City-County Library, or its staff, are responsible for the use of the Internet by their minor children. Parents are encouraged to discuss appropriate use of the Internet resources and to supervise their children's Internet sessions. The Library is not responsible for access gained by persons who deliberately attempt to circumvent library procedures.

3. The Library is neither a teaching facility nor do we supply techinical support for Internet/computer usage.

4. All users of electronic information resources are expected to use these resources in a responsible, ethical manner which include the following:

A. Users will be asked to present their own library card and/or other personal identification.

B. Using resources for educational information and recreational purposes only, not for unauthorized, illegal or unethical purposes. Respecting the privacy of others by not, for example, misrepresenting oneself as another user, and not by attempting to use, modify or gain access to account information, card numbers, files, passwords, or data belonging to others.

C. Not seeking unauthorized access to any computer system, or damaging or altering software components of any network or database.

D. Making only authorized copies of copyrighted or licensed software or data.

E. Not sending, receiving, displaying, or printing text or images or sound clips from Internet resources, chat-rooms, e-mail or other sources which may reasonably be construed as legally obscene or harmful to minors.

F. Not making changes to the setup or configuration of the software or hardware provided by the library.

G. Not using one's own software on the workstation.

5. Printing is available at 20 cents per sheet (black/white), 25 cents for color. If the person supples the paper, it is 5 cents less. The Computer Annex prints to the Children's Room color printer. (Terminals # 5, 6, and 7)

 


 

Children's Room

To allow younger children the opportunity to use the Internet, use of the Internet workstations in the Children's Room is limited to children age 12 and younger.  In addition to the Internet workstations, there is a multi-media game computer available for younger childern in the children's room. The time is limited to one hour per individual per day.

 


 

Multiple Users

 No more than two people (if more than one seat is even available) at a workstation except parents with young children.

Groups or individuals around people using the workstations are considered to be interfering with the use and privacy of the authorized users and will be asked to move away.


 

Library Fines

Payment of library fines is required on the same basis as for the check out of materials. (under $5.00)


 

Staff Monitoring

Staff will monitor the use of the workstations for security purposes conforming with procedures and acceptable use policies and the detection of illegal activities.

 


 

Alerts/Warnings/Suspensions

(First Warning) Suspicion or evidence of violation of library policy and procedures will result in staff alerting users to the requirements of the policy and procedures. The alert will be noted in the patron's record.

(Second Warning) A second warning will be noted in the patron's record along the two week suspension. The date and initials of the staff person will also be noted.

(Third Warning)
A user who has previously been warned because of a violation policy or procedures will be suspended for four weeks for a subsequent violation. The suspension will be noted in the patron's record with the date and initials of the staff member.

(Fourth Warning) A violation following a four week suspension will result in a one year suspension. The suspension will be noted in the patron's record along with the date and intials of the staff person.

Behavior that appears to be illegal that is detected by the library stff will be reported to the appropriate authorities and will result in an automatic suspension.
